The Teaching & Learning Cooperative initiative includes several WWU faculty members each year who serve as Faculty Mentors. In this role, they work collaboratively with the TLC team and with cohorts of instructors in the Teaching & Learning Cooperative Workshops, present all-campus events on special topics, and create posts for this site. Winter Warmers

Winter Warmers are virtual sessions, led by the TLCo-op Faculty Mentors. They are designed to defrost and reinvigorate teaching practices. Winter Warmers are available to WWU faculty and staff via the self-enroll Canvas course

Faculty Mentor Role

The faculty mentor role for the Teaching & Learning Cooperative (TLCo-op), a collaborative initiative by the CIIA/ATUS and WesternOnline/OCE, involves supporting faculty peers as they engage in professional development pursuits. In this role, mentors will:

  • Both terms: Join monthly one-hour general planning sessions.
  • Winter:
    • Deliver one campus-wide virtual presentation on a teaching and learning topic of choice.
    • Attend other mentor presentations.
    • Read the course textbook.
    • Attend and contribute to planning meetings.
    • Author one post related to presentation topic for publishing on the TLCo-op website.
  • Spring:
    • Participate as a cohort leader in the TLCo-op Project Development spring workshop to provide peer guidance, feedback, and ideas to participants in the areas of accessibility, equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and intersectionality.
    • Contribute and collaborate with fellow mentors to develop a pre-recorded video presentation about mentor experience and expertise.

WINTER

$1,000 Stipend, upon completion of deliverables and participation at end of quarter

Mentor Responsibilities and Time Estimates – Winter

Total Estimated Hours ~ 20 hours

General Planning (10 hours)

  • Synchronous: ~4 hours of planning meetings
    Tasks: Attend monthly meetings/check-ins with Western’s instructional design team.
    • Dates arranged by mentors and instructional design team
  • Reading and research: 4 hours
    Tasks: Read required workshop text, taking notes, and advance planning for cohort activities
  • Other tasks, meetings, and collaboration time: 2 hours

TLCo-op Online Activities/Events (8 hours)

  • Synchronous: 1 hour virtual presentation, 3 hours prep, 1 hour of logistics planning
  • Attend other mentor session presentations (3x 1 hour)
    Tasks: Host one synchronous TLCo-op Zoom session on a topic of interest/specialty and attend other mentor sessions.
    • Dates arranged by mentors

TLCo-op Resource Creation (2 hours)

  • Posting: Summary and write-up of an innovative strategy, method, or approach to teaching and learning, related to the virtual presentation, that follows the TLCo-op Template and integrates samples from the mentor’s class(es)

SPRING

$1,000 Stipend, upon completion of deliverables and participation at end of quarter

Mentor Responsibilities and Time Estimates

Total Estimated Hours ~ 20 hours

General Planning (12.5 total)

  • Synchronous: 1 hours/week during project workshop
    Tasks: Attend monthly meetings/check-ins with Western’s instructional design team
    • Dates arranged by mentors and instructional design team
  • Asynchronous: 7.5 hours
    Tasks: Reviewing discussions, project feedback, etc. of mentees, planning for cohort activities

TLCo-op Workshops (7.5 hours)

  • Synchronous: 7.5 hours (5x 1.5 hour sessions across three weeks)
    Tasks: Serve as a mentor in a break-out session for Thursday sessions.
  • Past workshop schedules have met Tuesdays or Thursdays 2:00-3:30 PM.
  • Workshop schedule will be developed based on faculty mentor schedule availability.
  • Mentors must be available for a 1.5 hour period each week (the same day/time each week for the workshop)
